I am currently reading Chandler's Red Harvest. I am enjoying it tremendously.
Although it was not written during the Golden Era, the prequel to The Maltese Falcon, Spade & Archer by Joe Gores was a wonderful read. I would really recommend it if you like San Francisco.
As an attorney, I find men wearing brown suits frequently. I own one solid brown suit that I like to wear with brown wingtips. I have heard from some of my friends that brown shoes are frowned upon in London, but in San Francisco it is acceptable. Although, then again, dressing in paper bags...
My grandmother, Patti Forbes, was one of the singers for the Oscar Rabin Band during the 1950s. The Oscar Rabin Band was one of the more popular British big bands during the era. My grandmother left the entertainment industry and her country when she met my grandfather, who was an American...
I wear a suit every day to work, even if I do not expect to be meeting with clients (I am a lawyer). I think it shows respect for the office, respect for the profession, and respect for yourself and your coworkers. While I agree that some jobs/professions may not feel that the suit is...

Edit: And as an afterthought, if I...

You got that right, AF. The weather here is generally cool and foggy for most of the year. I work mostly in Oakland, CA with the police officers association there. The climate is generally so cool that I am almost never hot wearing my suit. One of the benefits of living up here! :)
I practice labor and administrative law generally. My practice represents police officers in administrative, civil, and criminal matters. It's a fun gig.
Well, I'm actually glad to hear that it's not just us Yanks that are getting sloppy. ;) Guys like us have to bring back the glamor to our profession!
What kind of law do you practice?
I absolutely agree. It's a shame. I am a lawyer in the San Francisco Bay Area. It always shocks me when I see lawyers inappropriately dressed or not following basic men's fashion rules. I have been in court with public defenders wearing jeans (I'm not kidding). Not only is it disrespectful...
