Is there a good, concise web page or pdf that I could give someone to give them a basic introduction to the important things you need to know about owning, wearing, and caring for fedora (or other classic hat)? I picked a lot of it up hanging out and reading here, but I can't ask everyone to do...
John,
Thanks. I'd seen that site (and a couple other similar), but was looking for more about qualities or characteristics that people like or dislike about the caps, tams, and whatnot that they've experienced.
Mike
I wonder if any of you who have to wear Academic regalia on any kind of regular basis have particular opinions on the headgear? I'm going to be purchasing some in the (near?) future, and am interested in figuring out what I should take into account. I'm personally inclined towards a tam rather...
Frank, welcome to the Brotherhood from another recent brother. Ironically, my own Borsa came (originally at least) from a hat shop just across the river from yours - Hut Bender in Frankfurt am Main. I got it at a consignment shop here in Milwaukee and the staff said it was sold by a "cute little...
I worked on it a bit myself, but in the end couldn't resist the excuse to stop in at the Brass Rooster. John did great job smoothing out a few rough spots and shaping it up a bit. As luck would have it, I also did run into bond while I was there!
Tom, I may do that. I like John and the shop very much (had a hat redone there not long ago http://www.thefedoralounge.com/showthread.php?60921-Recommend-a-ribbon&p=1391819&viewfull=1#post1391819 ).
I just thought I'd have a crack at it myself first. I tend to be that guy who tries to DIY a bit...
Thank you! No surprise, 7 3/8 is exactly what I am!
Thanks. I do see where it all knots up near the bow, now that I look for it. No button though, I guess it left long ago on some blustery German or Milwaukee morning.
Buongiorno!
I would like to petition for Brotherhood membership. Apologies for what turned out to be a long post. My first Borsalino, and only my second legit Fedora, so I might be a little over-excited.
I stopped by a consignment shop today over lunch and instead of the typical "one-size"...
The hat had been ready for a while, but it took me some time to get time to go pick it up. Boy am I happy with it. John ended up deciding against the gray and doing a "dark espresso" ribbon. I haven't had a chance to take any pics, but little did I know pictures have been available ever since he...
Thanks for all the suggestions. I finally managed to get over to the Brass Rooster this morning, and John took his time with me in spite of the very full shop. Ended up deciding on a medium gray ribbon, and he's going to cut down the brim a little for me. He was really excited about doing the...
Ha! since I am a historian of early Christianity, and my particular approach is to emphasize connections with early Judaism, I think I should probably steer clear of the rabbinic look. If that isn't enough, my beard clinches the decision! Thanks for pointing that out.
Mike
Yep, Brass Rooster. Never been there before, so I'm looking forward to checking it out. Whoever I spoke to seemed really friendly and helpful on the phone.
It is my only black hat, so I definitely should go a bit conservative. I wondered if black on black was a bit funerary, and if some...
Hey, I have listed these shoes over at Ask Andy, and thought I'd mention them here as well. Prices include shipping in these United States, and are negotiable. I'll consider international, but the shipping would obviously have to be adjusted. I'd also prefer only to sell to someone who is active...
Hey,
I'm going to get a hat stretched and cleaned and reshaped as a fedora Thursday. It also needs a ribbon. The hat is black, and has a pretty wide brim (about 3.5 inches). I will probably trust the advice at the shop, but what do folks here suggest?
Mike
Thanks to m0nk for his recommendations - I'll start checking into them. As for the wool warnings from both, here's a followup. Once a wool hat shrinks is it done shrinking? If I go to an antique or other resale shop and run across a vintage wool felt hat that fits, it would seem it did its...
Hey, I want to get a first hat, and am looking for branding suggestions. I want a Fedora with a relatively short brim (probably around the stingy borderline, 2" or so) and for the sake of versatility will probably get something in a medium grey. I cannot afford to spend a lot on this, so I don't...
