Thanks for all of the input!
And I was afraid that this thread would be ignored! I appreciate all of the input and it has been an education, to say the least. I am thinking that in order to avoid a social or fashion faux pas, I will suck it up and go hatless. I don't need to be spending...
Nice picture. I do feel that a topper would be over the top (has a certain Austin Powers ring to it, eh), especially since I am but an usher. Besides, I would feel inclined to get a nifty cane as featured in that photo. I understand that back in the day the bowler was on the less formal end...
Howdy folks,
I am in need of some sartorial input. I am to be an usher in a wedding soon and the uniform is full on monkey suit, i.e. tux with tails. I have not worn anything of the sort since my high school prom many moons ago. I am itching to get a hat for the occasion as nothing in my...
Thanks, I'll do the Google search.
I have one that Meyer sells and it has a 1" stiff leather (leatherette?) sweatband, which I prefer to the Kangol type elastic band. But, of course Kangols don't give you fits by shrinking, either. If you do get the Vrai Basque, I recommend cutting the half...
M.C.-thanks for the background on Basque immigrants to S.America-it brought some clarity.
Coincidentally, the aformentioned photos of Gauchos in berets were taken by Rene Burri, who also shot some famous shots of Che Guevara.
Sefton-try Meyer the Hatter (www.meyerthehatter.com); they...

I saw this photo recently and thought I would share it around. Good to see younger folks (aside from soldiers, that is) sporting the beret. No guarantees that a beret will make you look like one of these guys...
I've had a few pairs of Justins. The most recent pair was a bit of a disappointment, seemed to be lower quality than the others. The others were great. Note that www.zappos.com has some decent deals on Luchese boots and the shipping is free both ways in case they do not fit well. I spent a...
I wholeheartedly agree with QB. Hideous! I hate cell phones, too, but as a parent I like to be accessible in case of an emergency. I know you said you didn't want to do the belt clip, but maybe if you had a nice leather case on your belt, you could pull it off. Seems to me that if the phone...
In the late 1970's, when I was about five, my dad went to Ireland and brought me back a herringbone flat cap. I kept it and a couple of years ago broke it out for my young son. Unfortunately, the wee cap was lost to the flood of last year.:(
Marc,
If you bought a new hat today, say an Adventurebilt, it would be worth noting because that hat will be vintage one day. And it might be nice to know that the hat was bought when the company was young, before it was a household name.;)
As for chronicling how much you paid for a vintage...
Marc,
I like your auction idea, especially in light of your excellent collection. But I don't think our ideas are mutually exclusive. When you have that auction, I would think you would want to include a description of each hat for potential bidders. Say that occurs fifty years from now...
Based on the responses thus far I am surmising that either
1) my suggestion (in paragraph 2, original post) stinks, OR,
2) most responders didn't make it to paragraph 2 and thus did not read the suggestion.
I guess I made the mistake being too long winded in my original post.:eusa_doh...
I started off with caps at a young age-railroad engineer cap was my go to hat. When I was about 5 years old, I was invited to be a bat-boy for a little league team and was elated at the prospect because I would get a cap with the uniform. Actually, they were out of hats and I wore my engineer...
Ever wonder what will happen to your hats after you kick the proverbial bucket? Will they be auctioned, donated to a thrift store, lovingly taken on by a relative? As many of us have experienced when procuring someone else's hats, it is sometimes hard to ascertain the vinatge of the hat and we...
I'll also endorse Akubras. Note that the Akubra Campdraft is essentially the same as the Stetson Open Road and is cheaper (& arguably higher quality) if you are buying new.
L@@K! Newsboy Driving Beret Golf Cap Hat Vintage L@@K!
Currently, my hat and cap collections are about equal in number. I have several caps that I rotate, mostly of the "flat cap" variety plus a few eight panels. (I admit to owning a few of the "baseball cap" variety, too.) I have a few...
Thanks for the bashing tips, gentlemen. I re-worked my Campdraft this weekend and am pleased with the improvement. Like Riccardo, I get comments like "Hey Tex/Cowboy", which took me aback at first as I don't see it as an especially western looking hat since I don't have a cattleman's crease...
