I saw this news today on an IT Portal - It momentarily caused me some confusion :)
For 130 years, Akubra has been making iconic Australian fur felt hats. But up until the last 18 months, the company was stuck in the '80s, operating on a DOS-based system.
The DOS system was made up of...
I also have two of the Nutria blends - my size is about the same as you and the brims are around that size - - one has been worn very consistently - through all sorts of weather and places. It should have its own frequent flyer card for all the places and planes its been in :-)
I cant say I...
Sorry GE-Man but Europa was definitely a West German product.
It was made by Uhrenfabrik Senden GmbH in Bavaria - I used to repair many of these back in my day as an apprentice - they are lovely little clocks - very easy to work on - very easy to problem solve - and once repaired very very...

CNN Video - Hats back in Style - Lock & Co
My wife noticed on the CNN website this morning a video about hats - so being the lovely person she is - she mentioned it to me :-)
Nothing groundbreaking in it - but its an interesting quick visit to Lock & Co in England...
Brisbane diamond thief wearing Grey Felt Hat stole $30,000 Diamond.
Described as Caucasian with a muscular build, about 185cm tall, with sandy coloured hair and blue eyes. He was wearing a grey felt hat and a matching grey suit with a green shirt...
when new - the difference between heritage and standard (Talking about the felt - ignoring the other "fittings" ) can perhaps be arguable - but give them time and wear - and the Heritage increasingly shows its differences. - Or thats what I have found.
Wow this one made me think - in a good way - as what was easily typed now on reflection opened a view into my own thinking.
I would say I do distinguish the trade from the craft - in so much as the trade can be and is for many "A job" - the "craft" is when someone takes the "job" to a different...
When I started in Watch & Clockmaking - it was at the time essentially a dead trade - secrecy amongst the tradespeople was - and still is legendary (Your catchcloth was just as much about covering the desk from view as it was for catching any dropped component).
Art your post - which I quote...
Not the police - these are images of those who had broken the law. I believe they refer to these as "Special Photographs", that were apparently mostly taken in the cells at the Central Police Station between 1910 and 1930.
My experience is that giving the hat a good soaking (punch it out open crown and fill with water - then wait - and wait until thoroughly\almost waterlogged) - As BanjoMerlin says - going open crown as an intermediary step definately helps.
Let it dry out for a day or so - then come back and...
How much rain can an Akubra take - well theres a rumour that Noah wore one - and that he used an oversized Akubra felt as the keel for the ark.
You "Truly" can drown one - and it will bounce right back
Yes whilst its still damp the crown will be a bit "soggy" and you should be a bit...
Well - if it "was" a real one - seems somone set the benchmark at around 46 times the current ebay listing - at the auction of his memorabilia this weekend - I just posted a link to an article mentioning his white Fedora going for some 56K - wowzers.
Just saw in the news that Michael Jacksons white fedora went for a piffling 56,250 US Dollars.

Now thats some price for a hat.
Not sure of it for a sweatband - I think the processes it goes through (tanning\oiling\waxing) wouldnt give it the right charcteristics for a sweatband.
But it makes a great strop for a straight razor. It gets a lovely smooth shaving edge - and has a nice draw in use.
