I am a milliner and block hats all the time. In school and in many businesses, a hot box is used to steam. This is an open cube of wood covered in canvas that is placed over live steam or even a Jiffy Steamer. The hat sits on slats in the box. Most people don't have access to this. I have a...
Millinery grosgrain is made differently from regular craft ribbon. The edges of millinery ribbon form little loops whereas craft ribbon has straight, flat edges. The fiber content of rayon or cotton/rayon allows one to "swirl" the ribbon, a technique that shapes the ribbon to fit the hat. A...
For this cold, snowbound week, I am discounting everything my very Vintage-inspired HAT shop.
Come take a look and say hi.

I had those as a kid
I had those as a kid and I am 52. We had a bag of pinkish ones in the bathroom. They worked just fine and the end just sort of fold over the hair in the middle and held it. Good for shorter hair. Wow, never thought I'd see those again.
Audreys Hats
I am not surprised to hear that it is 3 different hats. She obviously liked the calot, which often has an open crown.
If you have a woven beret, you can cut it and sew yourself this hat. Here is a vintage pattern you can use...
Hats in the car
Hi, I am new to this site but love that I have a place to yap about hats.
Having said that, I know that the car had a lot to do with the demise of the hat especially for women. It was just too cumbersome to be in a car with a hat on and as cars shrank, so did the millinery...
Sabrinas Hat
How I love a hat challenge.
The original picture shown looks like it is a simple blocked felt cap. The two other pics look crocheted, not knit, at least to me and I think the crocheted hat is an open cap, almost like a wide stretchy band. I did try to get the film online but...
Altering vintage clothes
Vintage clothes were meant to be altered.
Back then, it was commonplace to not only alter clothes to fit, but to cannibalize from garments. This was often done because many people didn't have money to buy new things and stuff often went from person to person...
I dyed my hair until almost 3 years ago, just before marrying a white haired man. You can see an inch of grey in my up-do in our wedding photos. I must confess, I hated growing it out, thought I looked awful and got a lot of looks from people in my new (and snobby) neighborhood.
But I didn't...
That little white hat
Watch the film the hat was in and you can see the other side and maybe get a better idea about the hat. It looks to me like a little white felt cap, not a beret and I can make that for you. Let me know if I can help you - I would love to. I am a milliner, I design and...
New to this...
Finding this site was a sweet surprise and I am so happy to be able to post.
The style and construction of Vintage hats and clothes so fascinate me that I became a milliner - I design and make women's hats (a Vintage profession if ever there was one!). And I work on...
Hello from New York
I am so happy to be able to post, and pleasantly surprised after trying so long to get in. This looks like a great site full of interesting people.
A little about me. I am in a very vintage business - I am a milliner. For those who are not familiar with the word, I...
