The Job Interview- how vintage can you go?

I recently read about a man who had a good interview and was qualified but was turned down for a teaching position because he had a beard. How employers perceive whether you will fit in has a great impact on whether you get a job. I recently interviewed a woman who had big curly hair and was...

The Job Interview- how vintage can you go?

Some hairdos work better than others. A bob, a simple updo, smooth waves a la Bacall, as long as they suit the wearer, are great. Like a classic suit, they're almost timeless. They're a lot better than the dreadful bed-head. But "period hairdos" to me are more like hairdos that are specific to a...

The Job Interview- how vintage can you go?

When in doubt, don't. I recently interviewed four ladies for a word processor position. I did not exclude any of them from consideration based on their attire, even though some were a little casual. But that is far from an executive director position. I also see many young women who apply...

Sharing your love of vintage with the children?

I couldn't agree more! Assuming you are not having a Super Bowl party, why don't they just stay home?

    Recent Egyptian finds

First line of Gone with the Wind: "Scarlett O'Hara was not beautiful." People tend to assume that if someone is charming and seductive, they must be beautiful.

    Suggestions Needed!

Don't talk down to her and don't automatically go into advice mode. As with anyone but your own children, don't give unsolicited advice. If you disagree with her, ask her why she thinks as she does (there may be a good reason). To which you can reply, "My experience with that has been..." or...

Are you more of a vintage girl, or a modern girl?

That reminds me of the movie where Barbara Stanwyck played a newspaper columnist who wrote about life on her genteel farm: cooking elaborate dinners, playing with the baby, gardening, etc. She wrote all of this from the small city apartment where she really lived. :p

    Recent Egyptian finds

Did you know that Helicobacter pylori bacteria have been found in mummies? The bacteria create additional acid in the stomach. They may have enabled people in ancient times to digest ill-preserved or rough food. However, H. pylori has been discovered to be a major cause of ulcers and stomach cancer.

Are you more of a vintage girl, or a modern girl?

My sensibilities and mores are definitely vintage. As for being independent, single women over a certain age used to be called "maiden aunts" or "adventuresses" or simply "unmarried." I'm thinking of Ruth Harkness, Amelia Earhart and Julia Morgan). Single or married, most women worked pretty...

    Display your library!

As much as I like to read, I usually prefer to check out books from the library. There aren't many books I like to regularly revisit. However, my father recently gave me the new translation of The Three Musketeers. I gave it to him for Christmas, and although he enjoyed reading it, he...

Age appropriate dress for your chosen era?

Yes, being age-appropriate is important to me. At 36, I packed away the miniskirts while I still had the legs to wear them. Looking like a grown-up lady doesn't have to mean being dowdy: to me, it means looking elegant rather than cute.

Work at the same company for 20 years and retire

What is the purpose of a company? Is it to make products or provide services, or to provide jobs and fund their employees' retirement? Given how most companies are run by crisis management and don't care about long-term employment, I'd rather be in charge of my own retirement. I'd also rather...

Work at the same company for 20 years and retire

This is why a 401(k) is better than a pension plan. Preferably, have your 401(k) in something besides company stock. I've been laid off from enough companies to not expect much employer loyalty. Although I have a good employer now, I don't keep more stuff in my office than I can carry home...

    Gaining/maintaining weight? Slowing down metabolism?

Try Body for Life. I've been on it for a few years and love it. It will help you put on lean muscle, not fat. It involves weight lifting and aerobic exercise and eating quite a lot.

    dressing up?

I dressed up as Carmen Miranda one year. I made a turban and stuck some silk peonies in it, wore a wraparound blouse hiked up to just under the bustline, and a long skirt. I darkened my eyebrows, borrowed some big earrings and wore red lipstick. That night, when I got home, I looked in the...

I'd have to stay here for another 27 years--I'm only 38. It could happen.

What's Love without Danger of a Broken Heart?

I never dated anyone after my last boyfriend, and that's been ten years. My heart isn't broken anymore, it's just that I couldn't get together with the few men I was interested in after that. I don't go to church, don't go to bars, and my experiences online have been icky. I've met some nice...

My best friend called on Valentine's Day and told me what a good friend I was. That was the best thing I could have asked for.
