I've been toying with the notion of taking a trek to the Queen City sometime between Christmas and New Year's myself. There is a Doria cap in the Batsakes shop that I''d like to take a look at it again. If any of you FLers are interested in meeting up there for lunch/coffee/something stronger...
I do think that Mr. Miller does go with his own instincts on his custom orders. But, hey! When someone has as much experience as he, who are we to argue! I think your hat looks terrific, and I would be extremely pleased with the results.
Yes sir! I have one Batsakes and three Gannons. I'd say quality is comparable. They both know their hats, but Gus Miller is wrapping up his storied career (60+ years in the business) whereas Michael Gannon is just starting out. I'm proud to own hats by both these guys.
Exactly! Rule number one (at least for me) for ordering a custom hat over the internet: Never trust the colors on your computer screen, even if someone tells you they are accurate. The color setting in your computer may different; and no color looks the same in different lighting situations...
Wonderful narrative and photo. I'm guessing my wait is down to under 7 months now. Still deciding what to have him do; too bad won't have the option of meeting him in person, as you did, to hash out the design and details.
I really do like the look of that hat on you! I have a Chicago myself (in brownstone), but is bash quite differently. Did you bash the crown yourself, or was it already creased?
Welcome! Hat is terrific and looks great on you. And your bash is superb. Michael always does a fine job; and, as you say, he is terrific to work with.
PBS is re-running Kangaroo Dundee where I live. This time I noticed that the star, Chris "Brolga" Barnes, is wearing a well-seasoned Akubra Coober Pedy. How cool is that?!
