Exactly! I keep buying the same vintage cafe racer over and over. And I justify it with "But but...look at the elbow pads on this one! And this one is a super rare Cal Leather...in horsehide!" And to everyone else they look exactly the friggin same. I could have stopped at my first Kehoe Cafe...
Give it a couple of days...the infatuation will pass. If it doesn't, well then...sell a couple of things and parlay the money into your new jacket!
Nice looking Horween steerhide...but personally I'm not a big fan of wool lining, or the black hardware. Or the four pocket cafe- prefer just two...
Awesome! Very thorough job!
I really like the links. And the info on the Japanese makers in one place is really helpful.
Dang! This could be just way too convenient...like pouring gasoline on a fire that is my leather jacket addiction!
Same here. It's been over two and a half years since I made my deposit, so I sent an email, left a phone message to check in. Nothing. Nada. I'm starting to worry...and wondering if he is still in business. Seems the website is the only sign of life.
If the jacket is supple and not dry, don't mess with it...
My first Bates had a back like this...I'm thinking they were made around late 60's to early 70's. Typically this period had a slightly longer body style than the earlier Bates. Love the teardrop Talon pulls on the chest pockets!
This isn't the jacket you're thinking of- the one for 1k is still up on ebay. I bought this "barn find" Taubers for a lot less (plus the deal included a pair of custom leather biker pants.) And I agree- I have a hard time paying big bucks for vintage... only because part of the fun is the hunt...
Just got this in – a vintage beat-to-death Taubers of California horsehide café racer jacket. Some of you might recall I was on the fence about buying a Taubers horsehide motorcycle shirt a while back…and I just never could pull the trigger on it. Well this latest purchase makes up for it. In...
Same here- I owned a new old stock Lesco cafe racer for a while. it was well built, but nothing really special as far as the leather. Maybe it was just too new. Ended up selling it on Craigslist for $150.
Sounds like a good idea. But I've learned through experience that I'm not good with projects...they usually end up in a pile on the floor in the corner of a neglected closet...only to be revisited when my wife wants to make a point about my indulgent jacket purchases.
Hah! My invitation to the lingerie and caviar cocktail party must have got lost in the mail…cause I just can't pull the trigger on this one. It’s a little bit too precious, coming apart at the seams under one arm, and about as easy to toss on as a straight jacket. It's got swagger, it’s got...
I didn't measure the sleeves, they were right about where they should be...but the jacket is as tight as I would ever want to go-- I had to struggle a bit and practically shoehorn myself into it. (Fortunately, it has zips way up the sides.) It barely fit me, so I can't imagine there is any way...
Thanks for all the comments! All good thoughts. Gawd, I love this forum...you guys are the best! I still haven’t pulled the trigger on it, and I suppose that might be a sign…I’m liking the horsehide, the patina, the amazing fit, the swagger. But I just can’t get past that Rawhide cowboy look…and...
At one of my favorite stops today, I spotted this vintage Tauber’s Horsehide motorcycle pull-over. Not really my thing, didn’t even want to try it on, but dang it, when I did- it fit like it was tailored made for me. It’s got side zips, and zips on the arms- makes it a little easier to pull on...
My Vicenza "Blackened Brown" Sheene is starting to get brown shading in some of the worn areas, and the jacket has developed some subtle brown highlights in places, like along the back yoke. But it's not something I can really capture in photos- the jacket would just end up looking black...or...
Yep. That's exactly what I'm always trying to find in a leather jacket...that mythical vintage overdyed black with brown undertones.
As an example, here's a vintage Golden Bear cafe I found a couple of years ago that has it going on...
And a vintage Cal Leather motorcycle jacket...
