Exactly what I think. I'm simply looking to fine tune a hat that is otherwise perfect for me (it fits better than any I've ever tried on, the felt is thick but soft and pliable, the crown height and bash shape are perfect [though I think the crown would be better suited to a slightly narrower...
Love this thread! I always make it a point to snap photos of cool hat linings or tags inside coats when out thrifting or antiquing. (One day I'd like to get my hat lining - standard black with gold text - replaced with some iridescent colorful satin, as no one sees it anyway.)
Here are a few...
That is good advice. I've been wearing it out and about for a month or so, have more than a hundred photos and ten or so videos and have spent a lot of time looking in the mirror. At this point I'm certain it at least needs to be taken down the smallest amount (to 2 3/8") if not all the way to 2...
I love Kevin's videos; I learned so much from him. He also helped me with a free hat steaming! Awesome guy.
I can see where he is the opposite side of the spectrum from the general mindset here. In his most recent video he referred to 2 1/2" brims as (direct quote) "a little overdone, a little...
You raise good points. I try not to let it influence my decisions much, but thus far I've received a lot of compliments on my hat. Those to whom I've mentioned trimming it down are rather against the idea.
It looks pretty great on videos, good in the mirror, but weird and wide at certain angles...
Thanks much, everyone!
Perhaps the day will come where someone with simultaneously modern and vintage interests will design a 3D computer program where you can see what different brim widths, crown heights, bashes, pinches, ribbon widths, colors, tapers, etc would look like on you. And then it...
I definitely am not aiming for the stingy look (which, like you, I can appreciate at times, but is not for me) I just feel that a 2 1/4" will look 2 3/8"+ on me, and so on. I guess I'd say I'm lanky though average height, and my face isn't narrow but angular (?). And even small button up shirts...
Quick update: I think what I'll probably do is call up a shop or two in nearby Cleveland or Pittsburgh (it pays to be more or less equidistant from them , and from NYC and Chicago!) and see if they can give me some 2 1/4" and 2 3/8" brims to try on - ideally I will wear my hat there, make a...
Thanks everyone for the helpful replies.
I definitely love Kevin's videos and am extremely grateful for the personal help he's given me in getting into hats. I just think his claims about brim sizes seem to be 1/4" off, maybe.
I love looking at the beautiful hats here and you guys very...
I'm in the midst of making a difficult decision - whether to trim down some width off my brim. I love my hat, it fits perfectly and the crown meets all my preferred aesthetics, I swapped the band out myself, and it is incredible that it fell into my lap for such a bargain at an antique shop.
So...
Just an update, in case anyone cares, has cared, or will care in the future.
I took the leap of faith and removed the ribbon from the old Stetson homburg. It hugs my hat like it was made for it. Virtually no gap whatsoever. The ribbon comprises a little less than half of the very frontal height...
I think I'm going to buy some cotton/rayon grosgrain, before I'm overcome with the urge to cut the ribbon off of the old homburg. Its ribbon is 1 15/16" anyway, which may be slightly too wide.
What width would seem most authentic to the 1940s film noir look, on a 7 1/4, 4.5"-5"crown, 2.5" brim...
Thank you, that sounds lovely, but I feel like a thicker band would go better with what I have in mind. I want a film noir aspect to the hat, but in a less rumpled, disheveled way from what you often see in those movies. (I'm also hesitant to go with the tight front pinch, as it makes the hat...
Very true, from what I'm finding. Much more in this hat already than my former, more modest fedora. Two fellows went out of their way to hold the door for me the other night, and my friends said it looked fantastic, as did a girl at the bar who approached me specifically to tell me so.
Haha...
I've been raving about my newfound hat here lately, and it just got better! I dated it via some internet research, and it turns out it is older than I suspected.
One thing I intend to do is swap out the current band - a braided leather one - and replace it with a proper ribbon. I have made...
I got called Inspector Gadget on the patio of a gay club once, which is tremendously funny to me
I've only recently worn my new upgrade hat out once, and the cashier gave me my drink for free (rarely happens). I also startled someone and another person moved out of my way abruptly; I think...
So, I took it for a stroll tonight. Probably inspired by the film noir I watched prior, I decided to wear it a little higher and cocked to the side. This has really made it perfect, in my eyes, and it has dispelled any fears I had. I even took the coat off and it didn't look too wide with just...
