Looking for a hat with generous proportions in 7 1/4 or more for a conversion. Would want high quality vintage (pre-'70s, preferably) beaver felt in dress weight.
My word, what a crown/slope! From the film noir 'Black Angel' (1946), with the fabulous Dan Duryea. Seen at 18:29 here: you tube.com/watch?v=ggzsFgZ2oNM&feature=emb_title (remove space between you and tube; the giant preview image for the video was superseding the attached image)
I have been considering shooting a PM his way, just to get an idea what a custom from scratch would cost, versus a conversion. Good suggestion.
If shipping weren't an issue, it would be cool to send my hat so that the proportions could be duplicated. I'm very happy with the post-bash crown...
Glad to be in the company of conversion wizards! I don't think I will muster the courage to attempt it myself, but at least I am figuring out what to start with and what to ask for.
Those photos reinforce to me how much I prefer as little taper as possible.
Well, knowing from handling 2...
Agreed 100%. It feels like a nice middle ground. I'm fond of the deep creases but need a bit more cleanness/symmetry than the handmade look. On the other side of the spectrum are the perfect factory pressed hats, but they can feel a tad impersonal and samey (just in my personal view - there are...
Oh no, I meant those old hand-creased, "lived-in" black and white movie fedoras often have a rumpled quality that I love but prefer to do without, myself. Not yours! Looking at all your other work, it's obvious to me that anything resembling rumpled is temporary and that it'll be very smooth...
Wow! That was a western?! That seems to be incredibly malleable in that case.
Before seeing this, I was going to double post and ask about the vintage Borsalino you converted. I was thinking, they come with tall crowns and occasionally pretty reasonable prices.
But after seeing this, I feel...
@T Jones - Haha, I'm one step ahead there! I saw and admired this when browsing the conversion thread! What an astonishing transformation. You'd be doing the hat community an enormous service by moving past hobbyist, due to your skill, but also because the fedora is a superior hat to the western...
@T Jones - I'm glad to see you in the (now merged) thread. I looked up your work beforehand in the Conversion Corral, at the suggestion of @belfastboy. It is truly fantastic, as seen above. Those creases are impressive! Seems like they may really suffice, for my needs.
How stiff of felt are we...
Thanks for the helpful replies, fellas.
@jlee562 - Oh, haha. No, I definitely won't be leaving it anywhere close to 6" once it's bashed. I just like the noir-y look of a deep crease. The final crown height will be much more proportioned, as I've had it before. Just with excess material.
This...
Thank you for the information. That is unfortunate.
I think I would like my eventual hat to be a 6" open crown (very straight sided/square shouldered, wide ribbon) in high % beaver. I like the idea of vintage felt, but does a vintage 6" open crown black hat even exist, to anyone's knowledge...
Hello,
Is it possible to take, say, a 5¼"-5½" open crown fur felt fedora and stretch the height to, say, 6" during a re-blocking? Maybe this is even common practice? Or perhaps impossible?
I have sent my hat in for work, and since I take good care of my hat, I figure I would like to get it...
Hi all,
I'm desperate at this point, and any response would be greatly appreciated.
I emailed JJ Hat Center and they quoted me the full, normal $90, even though I mentioned that my ribbon isn't tacked on and can be slipped off easily, and surely that would factor into the price (a significant...
I spent a mere $8 getting my brim cut down 1/8" by someone with a lot of experience, using the Boston brim cutting tool.
I spent $15 getting my hat flanged and the crown fixed up (one top pinch was very tightly pinched and the other not enough). They did the opposite of what I requested on both...
Thanks for the reply!
From what I gather, he wore a 7 or thereabouts. A smaller size than what the average member of the forum would wear today.
I'm lucky to have an exact 58cm head circumference, making a 7 1/4 an excellent fit. Would my 2 3/8" brim look proportional to Bogart's?
As a rule I...
Here's a Q
Does this brim seem 2-1/4" or 2-3/8"? According to a search, Art Fawcett said Bogart's 'Maltese Falcon' hat was 2-3/8", so I'd lean toward that. But someone else said 2-1/4".
What bearing this has on anything, I'm not entirely sure.
(Side note: Bogart's swagger is off the charts.)
You'll be happy (or indifferent) to hear that I have decided to keep trying to acclimate to the 2-1/2" brim. This is partly due to the suggestion here to give it some time to grow on me, and partly due to the outrage from my dad and brother who apparently really love the hat as it is. I was...
I made the mistake of trying to work with modern store-bought polyester grosgrain. I could only get it to curl a slight amount. So I could never quite get the ribbon tight enough at the top to hug the crown.
On the plus side, the failed project was my reason to learn rudimentary hand sewing...
Good advice, probably. Kevin himself suggested this as well in an email correspondence earlier today.
Perhaps my favorite thing about upgrading to a nicer felt hat is a good flange. Never did find that in the cheaper wool varieties (maybe I wasn't looking in the right places).
