My latest purchase!:
The Shift-Lock key doesn't work, but otherwise, it's mechanically perfect and ready for action. It's a 1920s Underwood Standard Portable typewriter :)
I suspect it needs a new ribbon, or something. But otherwise, it's fine. I shall post a typing-sample in the...
Today, I bought for $50, a very old (Ca. 1910s/20s) transverse-shuttle handcrank sewing-machine at the flea-market. It's branded "A.N.A.".
A bit of digging reveals this to be "All-Native-Australian", a trademark of the Ward Bros. "Australian Sewing Machines Limited", importers of...
Just curious, with portable typewriters without ribbons hidden underneath the typewriter body (as with the Remington Portable or the Imperial, or the Royal), but which instead had them on top of the machine (if that makes any sense), did they come with spool-covers? Or were spools left exposed...
I really like that one with the navy blue border and the dark red interior! Are these rugs nice and soft? Do you keep one of those old-fashioned carpet-beaters lying around to dust them off every now and then? Or do you just suck all the dust off with the Hoover?

In older times, it's my understanding that you could smoke virtually anywhere so long as it didn't pose a serious danger to others. Such as in gas-stations, onboard submarines, etc.
Smoking was legal in cinemas, ships, airplanes even.
Ladies and Gentlemen of the Forum...
I have the opportunity to buy a nice, working, portable Remington typewriter. Ca. 1928-1938. I've tested it and I believe it to be in good condition and worth purchasing. I will of course go back and double-check. After a bit of research, I believe it to be...
That rather depends on what one intends to do there. No. 1s are no issue. Going in to attend the other necessity of life, is another matter...Thank god for coat-hooks...
If they're anything like regular combo-locks, they should just snap down without needing to fiddle around with the dial.
Popping the lock OPEN after it's locked, without the combination, however, is a much trickier thing. I suppose you just have to sit there with a pen, a piece of paper, a...
Welcome, Flash.
Anyway, I'm back from trying on the suit. In the end I decided it didn't fit me as well as I'd like it to. The cloth was bunching up because of how large it was. If it was a DB, it might work, but as it is...no.
As promised, here's a photograph of the suit:
There is NO...
