sorry to get pedantic, but those fabrics are glenchecks (or glenplaids, or Prince of Wales checks) rather than windowpane.
a window pane is a much bolder check which stands out against a plainer ground. usually for sports jackets rather than full suits:

the technical term for this leather is 'analine nappa'. it's very thin, approx 0.7mm.

yes, that sort of thing. ideals of beauty / handsomeness altering by decade. i think i've opened a can of worms and we should put the lid back on it. ;)
that's one of the suits that Eddie Schave posted a while ago in this very thread (most of the photo links are now dead). i didn't realise some of them were still for sale.
i think that fabric is fine for caps. i wouldn't wear a whole suit in it though.
