Lizzie, i haven't seen any of the recent mumblecore films, but i have seen many of the early 90s 'indy' precedents.
for me, 'art films' have to be first and foremost visually interesting, beautifully shot. low budget / wobblycam won't cut it.
i'm guessing you mean directors like Wim Wenders, Peter Greenaway, Jim Jarmusch ... the art house directors ?
i think they need to be taken on a case by case basis. i can't abide much of Lars Von Trier's work for example, but i love many films by Ingmar Bergman, Bela Tarr and Andrei Tarkovsky...
belt back and patch pockets is more 30s than 40s.... perfectly fine on a 'sporty' fabric.
if your pattern is the more relaxed late 40s style i'd skip the belt back and save it for a more 30s project.
some Americans call practically any jacket with a belted back and patch pockets a 'Norfolk style' but for me a jacket really needs the vertical straps either on front , back or both to qualify as a Norfolk, and preferably an all-around belt too.
the main problem with mine is the lack of waist (which i wasn't expecting at all) coupled with the flare of the skirt. gives it all a /\ look.
