Are there any UK or European made stiff bowlers anymore?

Might explain what has happened to Christy's over the last several years. Their selection of fur felt hats sharply diminished while their prices steeply increased, and their felt color selection, which was 17 different colors for any fur felt hat other than their bowlers and toppers, dropped to...

Are there any UK or European made stiff bowlers anymore?

You wear your Christy's bowler in the summer? Good grief! Mine is, by far, the heaviest hat that I have, and that includes really thick "western" (actually Australian and Argentine) hats with 4" and 5" wide brims and thick leather "stampede strings". I once went for a fairly brisk and lengthy...

    Recommend a Panama ...

Panamas are great for hot weather, but they're unwearable in the wet unless you intend to get a new one every time one gets soaked. There are panama and other straw hats that are treated to resist water, but I've found them to be uncomfortably hot, assuming that it's because if they don't let...

Are there any UK or European made stiff bowlers anymore?

I would guess that this probably wouldn't work with a hard hat, but softer hats are easily shrunk if they, and particularly the sweatbands, are made of natural, non-synthetic materials. Just wet the leather, cotton, or linen, etc. sweatband and then blast it with a hair dryer, or, if like me...

Are there any UK or European made stiff bowlers anymore?

I have three fur felt Christy's hats in all, and the other two were both absolutely true to size. It was just the bowler that was definitely precisely one entire size too small, while their size larger "59 cm" bowler fit me exactly like my other size 58 hats, which is just what a number of other...

Are there any UK or European made stiff bowlers anymore?

Orangehaggis, What size hat do you usually wear, or more to the point, what size is your Christy's bowler, as from my own experience, and that of a number of others that I have spoken with, Christy's bowlers, at least of the last decade or so, have consistently been sized an entire size too small?

What hat are you waiting for today?

The wait ended for me, very pleasantly surprisingly two days ahead of the tracking schedule, today. A seemingly unworn mid-brown Akubra RM, bought second-hand for less than half the price of a new one. My new favorite hat, just perfect for the spring weather hereabouts.

Are there any UK or European made stiff bowlers anymore?

The vintage connoiseur's credo, which, while it may be true in general, is often utterly false in the particular. It's most certainly not true that the quality of everything has gone down over the years, as many like to claim. As an example, many members of this forum just love to endlessly...

Are there any UK or European made stiff bowlers anymore?

Christy's bowlers have had the same unique shape, possibly, for well over a century. They're also the only folks that I know of, all of whose fur felt bowlers were always hardened in the traditional manner. The original bowler hat was intended to offer head protection when riding a horse, after...

    Australian Gear?

Australian Gear also appears to be the same seller as Hats By The Hundred, due to the near identical look of their websites, their carrying the same products with the same pictures and descriptions, and their having the exact same prices. There was a forum member who was displeased with Hats By...

    Australian Gear?

Yes, I have placed three orders with them in the last two years, for two hats and two hat liners. Everything that their website said that they had in stock, they did. Everything that I ordered was just as pictured and described on their website. All three orders arrived well-packed and undamaged...

Anyone know anything about this hatmaker Daquino?

"... requested blue ribbon, got black, Ok with me." It sure looks blue to me on my monitor. Of course, a "navy" Borsalino in a shop looked absolutely black to me until I put it right next to a black one under a strong light. I do like it, either way you may see it, and a whole lot, too.

I Don't Care What Anybody Says

I never liked the idea of matching neckties and pocket squares, insofar as I've never cared for the idea of pocket squares. Wouldn't a handkerchief look about the same and actually be useful, as well? Furthermore, I rather fancy the shocking fashion notion of matching one's handkerchief to...

    Fishermen's sweaters site

I've shrunk quite a few wool sweaters successfully. Just get it wet and throw it in the clothes dryer. Take it out and try it on after a minute or two, as most of the shrinkage will occur right at the start. If it's still too big, give it some more heat, etc..

Akubra Adventurer in Black or Brown?

My ancient (93 years old) aunt actually expressed shock that I wore a grey hat and black shoes with a light grey suit, insisting that a brown hat and shoes were always the only things to wear with a grey suit. I myself think that either of these combinations work well with a light grey suit, and...

Akubra Adventurer in Black or Brown?

The Akrubra Adventurer available from U.S.A. retailers such as David Morgan, Kakadu Trader, and Cultured Cowboy is a different hat from the Akubra Adventurer available from Australian retailers such as Everything Australian and Australian Gear. The listed dimensions and photographs of these two...
