I found a place, but they're a wholesaler with a minimum $28 order.
Since I only need a couple of liners, that won't work for me.
Since a number of folks here in the Lounge seem quite adept at refurbishing their own hats, I'm hoping somebody can point me toward an online source for a small...
Hat Block Size: Should a block be a little larger than the hat size...
...or a little smaller? Or should the block be the same size as the hat's designated size, as well as the measured size of the head that's going inside the hat? (FYI, I'm thinking of getting one of those plastic "Hat Shaper"...
Do you remove the liner before wetting the outside of the felt crown?
I keep forgetting to ask this. But I've wondered if it's better to avoid getting the liner wet. Or does the water spritzed on the outside not even penetrate all the way through the felt? Thanks!
In the absence of an actual hat block, what items do some of you use as substitute hat-block shapes? I'm especially seeking suggestions for things which might help restore a simple open-crown shape to a pre-creased hat prior to re-creasing in the new shape.
Thanks!
I've noticed a few people showing their Akubra Bobby western hats. Just wondering: as it comes out of the box, is the Bobby as stiff as the typical new American cowboy hat?
And does it soften up over time with wearing and handling?
Thanks!
Thanks! That's good to know.
Presumably, that would be true of something like the Akubra Bobby, too, if I wanted to try re-shaping that one..? Or is comparing recreasing a precreased hat vs. an open crown (like the Boss) really apples and oranges?
Thanks, Jimmy! Not only had I already found, read and studied your excellent how-to -- I even printed it out so I'd have a quick-reference paper copy, too!
But you (and many others here) clearly know what you're doing.
I'm just wondering if a rookie like me will run into problems wrestling...
Thanks for taking the trouble to add those pics. They're very helpful.
So the brim is re-shapeable, desite its standard stiffness?
Looks like you did a great job on the hat!
Would you say a first-timer could successfully tackle bashing this hat?
Havana, can you please tell me more about re-shaping that Bobby?
Reviving this thread (if that's possible...I'm still a new guy here and not sure how to do that...) -- I'd especially like to know how difficult you found
re-shaping the Bobby crown.
And did you choose to leave the brim...
Hi, Indycop. Yes, pics would be especially appreciated, since the teardrop is what I'm interested in doing.
Any specific tips/advice/impressions on working on the crown and wrestling with the brim would be more than welcome, too.
Thanks so much!
Thanks so much for the reply. :)
Between the color and the brim, though, it sounds like you were disappointed in the hat, overall. Seeing it online, I envisioned all kinds of creative ways to shape it. Now I'm not so sure. I really wanted more of a western curl to the brim. That sounds...
A couple of years ago, you both participated in a short thread about the possible difficulties in coming up with a good style for this tall open-crown Akubra. You're the only ones I was able to find who had hands-on experience with this particular hat -- which I'm thinking of getting.
The old...
Yes, gtdean, I thought about doing the double-teardrop (a la the ol Roy Rogers hat some of us grew up with on TV...I kinda like that, but since this will be my first bash-attempt, I'm not sure I can pull it off).
Has anybody here ever tried a double-teardrop?
Cookie, I will indeed check out...
So I'm thinking of getting the Akubra Boss of the Plains, which has a 6.25" open crown.
For those who've bashed tall crowns down to size, is it do-able to take 6.25" down to a 4.5" crown in a teardrop-pinchfront shape?
Or is that too much of a height reduction to be able to accomplish...
Talking about a good quality furt-felt hat, like an Akubra... I'm guessing the answer depends at least in part on how much stiffener a manufacturer adds to a hat..?
Does the ease of re-shaping a pre-shaped hat also depend on the sharpness of the original creasing?
Or does judicious...
Boss of the Plains...too tall to do a 4.5" crown?
Yes, I saw the Silver Spur and thought "You're the one!"...until I saw the limited color choice, none of them light.
Over the past few weeks, I've pretty much memorized the Akubra catalog...hoping to spot something I missed.
I'm a little...
