That's along my line of thinking too, (a Montana Pinch with a mule kick in the back), and more of a Cowboy Curl to the brim. Something similar to Costner's 'Open Range' movie hat. I think with his size and proportions that style would actually look good on him. -

From yesterday. This is a custom Western that I made. The color is Carbon Steel with a black 3/8 ribbon and OR style bow. I also used a white Stetson liner that I salvaged from another hat. The sweat bow was made from the same black 3/8 ribbon. -

I've done a few like that, working smooth felt to raise the nap. Only I call mine 'Suede' finish :) Raising the nap adds depth to the felt, imo. -

Sand down a long fur hat?! DON'T DO IT!!!! Long haired hats are desirable. They make for some nice looking fedoras. I converted a couple of long hair Westerns into fedoras. The tan one is a Biltmore and brown one is a 4X Stetson. Before and after pics, not in order.
