The reason Tilleys work so well is that sewn in thin closed cell foam in the top of the crown and the entire brim. If you have ever worn a boonie hat, you found out that they are blazing hot because there is no insulation on top. It is just the fabric layer.
I have not tried the hemp Tilley...
For real work? Get a Tilley
It makes a good winter hat as well with the insulating foam in the crown and brim. That insulation makes it the perfect summer work hat.
and don't forget Fred Ward playing Henry Miller in Henry and June. He wore his fedora with one side up and one down in a very cool looking carefree fashion. He rode a bicycle like that to see Annis Nin. He looked super in his whole getup.
I wear it in all manner of options depending. Remember in A River Runs Through It? They pushed it up in front at times. I like that when photographing. Ansel Adams wore his like that as well.
Sorry I did not get back to you sooner. I have been traveling the southern California deserts through the Mohave into Death Valley. I took the Borsalino with me and we camped every night. The hat holds up to all manner of treatment. I don't abuse my hats but they have to travel and not be fussy...
Not making a determination on the hat but the entire image has a blue cast to it. I tried washing it in Photoshop and the hat you mentioned still had a very slight leaning to blue, more like hint of blue.
For me, brown goes good with other earth tones like khaki or green tones. Grey is good with blues or even something dark as navy blue. Both colors work with jeans if the hat style works with them. Try some combos and see for yourself what you think.
Very cool Aerol. That is the kind of vintage hat I would look for. I am amazed at how nice this Borsalino Safari is. The weight of the fur felt is just perfect, there is no break-in period and like the Chinese hat girl said, the unlined light fur felt is comfortable over a much wider temperature...
Thank you so much Dave. That method works perfectly. It is very easy to fold and to re-deploy to its original shape. I don't baby my things and travel a lot, being an aerial mapping photographer and avid hiking/backpacking photographer. This hat will fit in perfectly.
After seeing all the very cool hats that you guys are bopping around in, I thought I would have a quick look in my local hat shop. Big mistake! For the most part, they vend cowboy hats. This is the southwest. Two walls were filled with every manner of cowboy hat but that is not what I was...
That is right and if folks still worked with chemicals and paper it would not be dissapearing. It is a choice. I have had my own B&W darkroom and my own color darkroom as well but by far prefer my Digital darkroom to the chemicals and, well, darkness. These days I use Convert to B&W Pro, a...
We have no rules in Arizona. It seems to be a different place but you can get away with just about any fashion thing you want to. Things are mostly casual. Most of the time we are looking for a hat that protects from the sun and keeps the head cool. That includes winter. There are mornings where...
In those temps, style quickly is forgotten and people wear whatever they can find that keeps them warm. I used to live in a place that regularly got down to -40 and snow was on the ground for 6 months out of the year. People put on anything and everything they had to ward off the biting cold.
