I love vintage style but don't like drawing attention to myself. You ladies always look SO amazing...love it, but do you think there's a way to dress vintage without having to hear everyone's comments?
@fmw, thanks.
I've never been to the Derby...wish I could go this year and witness some of these incredible hats for myself. Alas, I will be sunning myself on a beautiful beach in Thailand, where I will have no qualms about wearing a Panama straw...May 15 or no. :D
The Kentucky Derby has done something new this year by naming Panador Hats the official Panama hats of this year's Derby. I'm partial to the Panama hat and think it's pretty sweet that the world’s most prominent hat event has decided to recognize genuine Panama hats. :eusa_clap

You know, maybe Kasia Walicka-Maimone, the costume designer, was going for the intimidating look of the fedora that the NYT talked about:
"In [The Adjustment Bureau], mysterious men wearing fedoras of Mad Men vintage seem intent on tormenting Matt Damon and Emily...
I don't know why I'm telling yall about this...just decreasing my chances... ;)

I'm actually surprised to hear that people associate fedoras with mobsters. Throw in a trench coat & cigarette, and I could see it.
Interesting thoughts from everyone. I enjoyed this thread!
Incredible -- one hundred years isn't so long, yet this way of life seems ancient. First time I've caught an extended glimpse into the early 20th century on film. Eerie. Thanks for posting!
Tom, in the comments to this video there was a link to more footage from the same time period...
thought you guys might find this article interesting. It's about the costumes in True Grit, including the hats, designed by Oscar-nominated Mary Zophres

Thanks all!
Thanks for your responses everyone! Seems like feathers have been around for a while and across the entire spectrum of society. Though you don't hear of anyone aspiring to become a plumassier these days.[huh]
hey everyone, I'm trying to write a short blurb about a hat with a feather, but I can't determine in what era / segment of society men's hats with feathers were most popular...maybe in gangsters' fedoras or fedoras worn with zoot suits?
Please help! In what time period and on whom do you...
Wait, don't regret your trip to NYC!! I had a fantastic, safe experience there -- my trip was just too short. Enjoy it while you can and enjoy Ecuador next time. :)
Thanks so much for sharing!! I am from Houston myself...if I move back to Texas at least I'll have an excuse to invest in more Panamas. :)
Very nice hats and helpful pics... I know brisa means "breeze" in Spanish, and I looked up calado, which means "latticelike." Both good descriptions for...
Never knew that Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel, a French fashion icon, had such an incredible story! If you haven’t seen Coco Before Chanel with Audrey Tautou, you must watch it. It connects Coco’s beginnings at an orphanage and her desire for independence to her fashion innovations.
She bucked...
