Kong lives
The special effects and digitally enhanced/reproduced version of old Manhattan are supposed to be stellar. Article in Chi Tribune the other day about how this picture will set the standard for how the past is depicted in future films.
I can't wait. The original Kong still holds...
forget WHITE CHRISTMAS!
--- it's a gaudy Technicolor nightmare compared with the sheer black-and-white CLASS of HOLIDAY INN! And Danny Kaye pales in comparison to the stylin' Fred.
And speaking of Bing, how about GOING MY WAY? Not totally Christmas, but bringing Barry Fitzgerald's mom to...
scents
want authentic vintage scent? Can't beat Evening in Paris in that distinctive cobalt blue bottle. My mother always had that and Chanel #5 on her dressing table. I haven't smelled Evening in Paris in years, it might well be yucky. It's also hard to find now and expensive, some mail-order...
Do you like vintage jazz, gangsters, history and the Prohibition Era? Then check out my historical fiction novel, Hudson Lake, which is now available as an e-book from Twilight Times Press, and is coming as a trade paperback in April 2006.
In the summer of 1926, jazz lovers from all over the...

they look easy, don't they? (i hope!)
Lauren et al, thanks! I did receive two patterns from the lending library; they look pretty simple, but I'm a sewing simp, so...let's just say I won't be spending a lot of money on expensive fabrics.
my birth mother or the nuns at the orphanage (no lie) named me Laura -- I always assumed it was from the Gene Tierney flick. I've never had a quibble with it...
modern drunkard
yeah, i'm the Chairman, AND a broad, to boot!
BTW, if you're not familiar with it, Modern Drunkard is quite a cool magazine for iconoclasts like us.
green river redux
Shamus,
Green River is a kind of lime? (I guess) flavored pop that originated in the '20s (I believe) -- it is beginning to make a reappearance, at least in the Midwest, at hot dog stands. Used to be available in bottles and as a fountain drink.
Another Chicago favorite...
I'm struggling thru this droughty summer in the Midwest too, but I don't think I could live in a climate without seasonal changes. Fall is definitely my favorite time of year (must be a nostalgic thing, so many of us love it), but I even like winter in Chicago. Don't think the St. Valentine's...
I have three vintage furs -- 2 '20s, one '40s -- and the downside is the skins become brittle and no furrier will touch them, not only for restoration, but even for storage. Sucks!
little leo
i can't help it, I like Leo DiCaprio. (now shoot me.) Finally saw The Aviator last night, and think he did a commendable job -- costuming was top-notch and he really carried off the look, especially for the '20s segments.
bottle inks
i have a great old black-and-gray marbelized Cavalier pen from the '20s which i love, but have a hard time getting appropriate bottle ink for it. Go to Office Max and try finding bottle ink! Any suggestions on appropriate dipping inks for period pens?
there were definitely "sports shoes" in the '20s, primarily of canvas, with hard rubber soles, cap toes, and laces, typically with a 1" or so heel. In fact, I just sold a pair.
of all things, searching for vintage telephones! someone made mention of buying an authentic one. I'm still looking for a cheap (ha!), real candlestick with separate ring box...
