Three Elosegui txapelduns. I hang all berets for a while, using gravity to soften them up. I know some berets are soft from the start, but I really like Elosegui even though I find them too stiff from the start.
What are the differences in use between a beret alpin and a txapeldun? A txapeldun seems slightly larger, but were they historically used by anyone, or are some sort of curio for tourists?
in summer you need a cotton beret, I tried a wool beret but it is too hot most of the time. Which brings me to the point, I still have not found a perfect cotton beret... I like Arandu's crochet ones, but they run small for summer, I would like something with a larger 'vuelo' to provide more...
Thanks for the info! I am in a slow cold war with 'someone' who thinks small berets look nicer, whereas I like large berets because they are more practical. That means I can always say I am shrinking (a little bit) a larger beret by using it!
I am just poorly literate, and I just use 'cabillu' (which I might be mispelling) for all my berets, most of which are actually boinas vascas. I use the label to put the boina on, so the cabillu ends point somewhere back, but at an angle
I noticed that the cabillu (or whatever people call it) tends to point back, but not square with the label (for all my berets). It is noticeable enough that I, well, noticed it, and not bothersome enough that it bothers me.
It never points forward though, so I assume it is intentional.
Let me add, I find the wool feels quite different in the two. I personally find the Ano 1868 is noticeably smoother against my skin (this is true of all Elosegui berets). Elosegui berets are also massively stiff and take next to a year before getting soft.
I got this in early 2021 from Arandu, and I have not worn it yet (I have a grey one I prefer). It is technically spanking new, never worn, never washed, and it is well smaller than 30cm in diameter!
Note I am not complaining if the newer ones are bigger, I prefer a 29/30cm beret size, I find...
