I just received these 100% beaver swatches from Michael today if anyone is interested. These are only the colors I’m interested in. His light weight felts are Fepsa and the dress weights are Winchester. I’m leaning very heavily toward Light Weight Fepsa.

Awesome - thank you for sharing - I haven’t had any of the Winchester felt in my hands but I can vouch for the light weight FEPSA - Very nice - what I think of when I think of a dress fedora - what do you think of the Winchester?

It really depends on the batch. The dress weight samples are quite a bit stiffer than the LW. That being said, my first two Gannons were dress weight and they are pounced smooth a silk and soft as warm butter. I have another dress weight in Steele and it is stiff. Still a great hat and one of my faves, but stiff. I have a Highwayman in Natural Dress/Western weight and it is pounced super smooth too, but more substantial than the others. All great hats but have different characteristics.

My very first one in Natural and still my favorite! Very soft dress weight beaver.

My second in Sahara dress weight and is equally as soft.

Then the Steel in dress weight. Much stiffer.

And the Highwayman in Natural Dress/Western weight. Love this one too but it’s much more Western. I fiddled with the brim a bit.

I would go for the whiskey LW color. I have one, and it's a great color, but this is only my humble opinion ofc. ;-)

They’re all fantastic colors and in my wheelhouse. I’m drawn to the more muted, or subdued earth tones. The dress weight Winchester in Pecan has really gotten my attention since studying these swatches for a while. It is a shade or two lighter in color versus the light weight FEPSA. Michael said in an email that some of his Winchester dress weight pecan hoods are quite stiff while some are much softer. I could possibly opt for one of the softer pecan DW’s and let him work his pouncing magic. I’m several weeks out so there is plenty of time to change my mind a few more times, which is very likely.

I’m sure you already have an idea of era & style of hat you want, & maybe I just missed it. I always agree with muted & subdued but I think colors should depend on era & style; what was available at the time? Do you want a WAR or a TAR? Flashy, contrasting WAR or tone on tone TAR? For me those things factor into main color.

Having said all that I like the Pecan DW & the Whiskey DW.

I’m in the tone on tone, BEB, TAR camp, for sure! It will likely have OR dimensions but I will mix it up a bit with the bow work, just enough to keep it from being an OR copy cat.
