What Hat Are You Wearing Today ?

A couple of hats I’ve worn recently. I’ve been struggling to post promptly after wearing of late.

Yes, you can steam the brim down and it will stay that way. Without reflanging the hat, getting a snap brim out of it probably won’t happen. Straw does have a bit of memory, just not the same as felt. Light steam and gentle hand work may get it back close to the original shape. Patience. Too much steam with heavy hands and you could end up with a pile of wet grass. Wooden spoons with a rounded back can help with a reshape. Set the steamed hat on a soft, dry towel to help creat depth and you can work an implement back and forth.

This Monticristi came with a tall cattleman crease and a wired brim. I steamed it open and it has a 7” crown made for a conehead. I removed the brim wire and used a shackle to curl the brim. All of the crown work was done by hand w/o a block.

Definitely Panama weather in these parts. Panama Hats Direct, a “fino fino,” finely finessed and finished by the fingers of Fawcett.

Rehfus & Cie. "Olympia Extra Qualität", possibly mid 1950s. I found this Soft Felt back in 2015.

Carl Johann Rehfus, also known as Oberländer (1855-1926), head of the Kehler hat factory, was a hunter, cynologist (canine specialist) and well known writer on hunting and cynology.

PHD Panama - pay no attention to the bars of my prison cell reflected in my glasses lol.

I’m thinking of trying to steam this hat to get the front brim to snap down a bit more.

At this moment I have never applied steam to a hat before.

Is this a good idea? Bad idea? Got any advice before I go make mess? Please let me know

PHD has a couple of YouTube videos on shaping their hats that could be helpful (but they are pretty limited In scope).

You likely need to flatten the curl in the front to get the front to dip down a bit more. Getting it to snap up and down could be a challenge though.
