What a difference 24 hrs makes.... were over 30 degrees warmer than this time yesterday.... No jacket required. Time for a nice little Royal Deluxe Open Road. Too bad the liner was missing on this one.

I believe he was one of the last hatters, along with Carlo Sala, from Monza to sign hats.

The Vimercati family has always worked in the industry as subcontractors and at a certain point in the life of the Monza hats production they went it alone, probably in 1953.

This is, if I'm not mistaken, the first Vimercati hat I've found on the Italian market.

I'm showing it to you fresh out of the shipping box.
It's a lobbia, or hamburger, in light blue gray felt with a matching ribbon and brim trim.

The felt is of medium consistency and the shape is typical of lobbia produced in Monza, the largest hat production center in Italy.

I'm amazed to have found this relatively young hat in such good condition.

Every now and then, a stroke of luck happens.

This hat, rescued from a local theatre wardrobe, needed some work. I had a small piece of leopard that I adapted as a ribbon, yielding an "Out of Africa" Stratoliner of sorts. The fur was scrap from my wife's grandfather. He was a tailor and with his business partner Philip Mangone designed women's suits and coats in the 1930s-40s - often incorporating fur trim. On a buying trip to Italy one time, Mr. Massimo lingered to visit with family while Mr. Mangone headed home to NYC on the Hindenburg. He survived that epic explosion and worked 20 years afterwards.

Weather up here in central west Florida feeling cold. Very cold and very French. Wore a Mossant homburg that is clearly meant to have pinches (felt more like a fedora than the thickness of a homburg, but with the binding and curl of a homburg). It's an interesting one, for sure.

I checked the weather before I left the house this morning, because I don't usually wear this one in the rain. There was nothing showing on the radar, but it received a light soaking shortly after this photo was taken.
Oh well... I guess it's good to let these old hats know they're still alive every now and then. LOL...
On a side note - I went to the dermatologist yesterday and had some more Basal Cell Carcinoma's removed. Sunblock, regular screenings, and sharp looking fedoras! That's the way to be...

Wearing a hat I rescued. The picture during refurb is after major cleaning and steaming. The other picture is me wearing the hat in a mostly presentable shape.
It is a Mexi-hat 5X not made anymore (as far as I can tell). But it makes a nice beater here on the homestead.

Capitalising on the brief moment of sunshine. January 2026 had three times the average recorded rain since records began. Being confident about wearing my bespoke Susquehana is a welcome change from January's soggy condition.
