TONAK "Plant Hückel" "Lutra", possibly late 1840s. This is an early transition Velour (made for the American Market) after all hat factories in Czechoslovakia were nationalized. "Lutra" is European Otter and quality type of Velour Felt and has a very Soft Hand. This Velour is more in a Trachten style with a very intricate Velour Felt Band. I believe this Velour has a Felted Edge. This Velour was part of two early "Plant Hückel" and "Formerly Hückel" Velour find from 2013.

Yes, nothing happened to JHS during WWII. It could be very early 1950s. This is an early post WWII transitional hat. The two hats belonged to a president of a college in Pennsylvania. Here is the other hat "TONAK Formely Hückel Zephyr Seal Velour".

J. Hückel´s Söhne (JHS) Zephyr Seal Velour, size 7 3/8 (late 1930s) vs. TONAK Formely Hückel Zephyr Seal Velour, size 7 3/8 (late 1940s early 1950s)

The older JHS Zephyr Seal Velour's (right side) Black felt, finish and hand are at a slightly higher level. Same with the sweatband and liner. The TONAK Formely Hückel Zephyr Seal Velour is slightly lighter at 4.16 ounces vs. 4.40 ounces for the JHS Zephyr Seal Velour. Both have the same crown height (~ 6 inches) and brim width (~ 2.5 inches). They both have similar corrugated ventilation systems. The JHS Zephyr Seal Velour ribbon width is ~ 2 inches. The TONAK Formely Hückel Zephyr Seal Velour ribbon width is ~ 1.5 inches. Both hats were made for the American market.

Etsuko back home tomorrow (New Year’s Day), so taking advantage of solo time to barbecue. Been pretty busy trying to keep everything in order while she’s been away, so I went for the electric grill today with my new outdoor light. Regular BBQ hat - the Akubra Cattleman.

The Cattleman might be my favourite Akubra. I’d quite like to get one in another colour.

Hat pictures for adults (you figure it out what it is) if ever there was such a thing. This posting should come with a warning!

Happy new years Eve Morning! A chilly 24 degrees with a really nice orange flash at sunrise ( didnt get the camera outside in time, but it WAS bright orange for about 30 seconds... third day in a row). Outside for dog ball throwing time under a black Sovereign Stetson Key Club Dexter ( Imperial Ultimate finish). Nice warm hat to end the year with
