What Hat Are You Wearing Today ?

With some warmer, sunny weather the past week or so, I’ve temporarily traded the Stratoliner out for this Open Road style straw. What hat is it? I have no idea. Some kind of Frankenstein bootleg something. Bought it online a few yrs ago advertised as a Resistol but it arrived with both resistol and Stetson markings which leads me to believe that it’s neither. But, it is a lightweight hat that fits my head well… so I kept it.

Sears Roebuck early 60’s, I’m going to say 1964, and that’s only because that’s my birth year, but really I have no idea, lol. Anyway, since Randall posted that beautiful Sears Roebuck of his several pages ago, I’ve got a little more appreciation for this loved beater hat I have here.

One of my favorite parts of it happens to be the original owner’s business card, which you can see (really a photocopy to preserve the original) stuck behind the sweatband as it was when I bought it.
I wish I had a before picture of it - this thing looked like it had been in the back window of a car for several years with the ribbon faded to light gray on the front and left side, and then wadded up and crammed under the seat. I was able to bring the ribbon back to black and steam it back to some kind of decent shape, and it’s now a fun beater to wear.

Sorry guys, I know I need to work on shortening my posts. Sometimes I get carried away talking about these things.

WFH today, so when I do duck out later it'll be in a denim cap from Bronson a year or two ago. Glorious thing - an eight panel in a light (8oz I suspect) blue denim / chambry, no stiffener inside the peak, and no stud either. Loads of body to it to flop around, I love it. Wish they'd bring the model back in other colours.... I wanted to buy the ivory version this year but it seems to have been discontinued.


Watching the weather with an eye to Sunday. This Sunday sees the fifth annual Flaneur with the Chap magazine. We'll all mass at the statue of Beau Brummel on Jermyn Street at noon, and after some words from The Editor, we all set of on a glorious promenade sans purpose. Typically things wind up at six or seven in the evening when we discover we've all dispersed in many different directions. There were about fifty of us on the first one in 2019; Covid stopped play for a couple of years, but since the return in 2022 we've grown in numbers every year. Last year there were chasing a couple of hundred of us, and almost as many photographers at the start point. It's where Summer really begins for me. I have a tradition of wearing a straw boater at this event, though I may forgo if it rains, in which case I will most likely reach for a Billy Chyldish cotton beret. The weather will also dictate whether I step out with a walking cane or an umbrella...

A cooler year wouldn't be all bad, of course, as it would allow for a felt hat as an option. Don't often see very many of those at the event in May. Still positioning Gustav (the editor and organiser) for an Autumn Flaneur that would allow a different range of wardrobe choices on the day. London in November has its own particular glory.

Bright sunny morning... time for some straw! I scrubbed up a couple of the lawn mowing hats last week ... got to thinking that the cheap Stetson actually looks pretty decent... So here ya go

A little cooler this morning so I grabbed a favorite off the wall to drop the kids off at school. My Swann Hats Beaver Blend, I actually like this hat more than my Dobbs GP, not sure why though.

Nice! I like the stitching effect on what looks more, to my eye, a city hat rather than the Western it's more usually seen on. Gives it a very distinctive look, maybe a slightly ore casual feel too. Great hat.
