Post New Hats Here!

Motsch. I am especially proud of this one. Stamped 10 Jun 1937 (last pic) and it really does look brand new, the sweatband especually so.
The felt is excellent.

Well Steve, you talked me into a Bowler. I’m really excited about this one. I’ve also been looking for an older Pre-Stetson Mallory, so this kills two birds with one stone ! 1823 date on the Mallory logo, and the older Union label that puts it 1934 or earlier. Phenomenal condition after a little cleaning. The box evidently isn’t the right one for the hat but a very cool old Higbee box in like new condition. Looks like May and Higbee were both in the famous Euclid Ave Retail District in Cleveland.

MacLachlan Homburg "The Eden". Gifted to me by Daniel (muchísimas gracias, Daniel). I remember he bought it from DOGMAN, but I might be wrong.

Ha.. I see autocorrect changed my “best” to busy. Guess I was too ‘busy’ to do my ‘best’ [emoji2]

Best,

Knox Raleigh Haberdasher.
This hat used to be Alan's. The buyer took off the curl, and I did my best to replace it while I take it to Ignacio.
Most of the pictures are Alan's.

What do you think of the curl? It needs a little more inward curve, doesn't it?

To be honest, I'm the least qualified person in here who can give you an honest answer.[emoji31]

That is a fabulous looking bowler, Tim. Great catch.

OK. For all of us who have been wondering about the quality of Nick Fouquet hats, and whether they're worth the price tag:
They're not.

The leather sweatband and the liner are very nice.
The color of the felt and the ribbon and the lines of the hat are nice.
The quality of the felt is mediocre at best. It is thick and unruly. It is waaaay below the quality of Optimo, and even more below the quality of my best vintage felts.
I think it is mainly rabbit, not even wild hare, but I can't be sure. It reminds me of the felt in a rabbit felt hat I bought from Hufvud that I didn't like.
Also, the cut of the raw edge is irregular, I guess because Nick Fouquet says that "perfection is imperfection", but I'm going to ask Ignacio to cut it evenly.

To me, it isn't worth the $300 I paid for it, let alone the $1200 I have seen some of these hats go for.
I would say that new, it should cost about $220 retail.

Thank for the write up, Max. More or less what was expected, but good to see it confirmed. I'll admit though that the sweatband does look awfully nice.

That is a superb looking hat, Max. I'll put it on the "wants" list.

Both the Disney and the MacLachlan are excellent hats, but this one takes the cake for me, Max. That is just soooo wonderful. Fantastic.

Good get, again. I'd love to see it after Ignacio brings it back from the previous... erm... adaptations.

A member of a FB group pointed out that the reason the sweatband looks wavy is that it is improperly cut or positioned.

Thanks Stefan.

Had another one waiting for me on the porch when I got home last night. An Open Road with Embroidered Liner I’ve been looking for. Working on it with Coffee this morning before going outside for a Brake Job on the Wife’s car.

Had some spots on it and the sweat is a little fragile, but got it for the liner. I think I have most of the spots out and steamed it back to open crown.

The onion skin liner cover is very yellow and I hate taking away from the fabulous embroidery. Are there any concerns with removing the onion skin ?

Could be. Another reason could be that the felt has shrunk somewhat, which also causes sweatbands to wave.
